Retaining wall, Broughty Ferry

Our client got in touch to help separate their outdoor space to create two levels for planting areas. A wall had been standing in the same position but required some restoration.

We advised to dismantle the existing structure and rebuild using lime mortar. The previous structure had been built with cement, an unsuitable mortar binder for this style of wall and stone type.

All of the stone was reclaimed and repurposed and built in a random coursed style. Drainage points known as "Smoots" were built in the structure to allow water to safely pass through the wall from the above plant beds and preserve the walls integrity.

Another contractor had previously built the steps. There was some stone available to finish the wall with a cover band to protect the top of the wall in the same style as the steps.

Please see below for an image of the job on arrival.
